Boho weddings and pampas grass
Boho inspired weddings
When we hear the word boho, short for bohemian, this conjures images of peace symbols, tie dyed fabrics, and macrame for many of us …. or at least many of us beyond a certain age. Not necessarily the inspiration that some would imagine for wedding décor. I have met some mothers of brides who weren’t initially convinced this was an appropriate aesthetic to pursue when styling a wedding. While I have worked with brides in the past who were indeed looking for that “flower child” look, complete with crowns of daisies worn upon their heads and a barefoot walk down the grassy aisle, current trends aren’t adopting the “Woodstock” vibe. However, certain elements of classic boho design have been introduced into wedding décor in such a way as to give a nod to casual and natural elements while holding on to the formality many expect in a wedding.
The most popular component of boho décor I am seeing used in weddings is pampas grass. Again, dating myself here, but my childhood memories of dried pampas grass used in interior design typically conjures a tall wicker vase filled with 5’ stems of pampas gracing the corner of a living room. And yes, I thought they were so cool! But modern designers have looked at this natural material with a fresh perspective and given me a whole new idea of what pampas grass can be.
The texture and feel of dried pampas grass is soft, comparable to feathers or faux fur, and has a lovely visual contrast to flowers and greenery. It is unique compared to other classic elements of floral design, and pleasing to the eye. The beige tone of natural pampas is perfect with warm autumnal colors, and equally appropriate with more vibrant spring and summer flowers where it invokes the feel of coastal beaches.
Pampas grass plumes can also be tinted in practically any color. This allows for lots of possibilities, many that would be a more subtle nod to boho style.
